Mumbai: HistoryTV18 is set to premiere World War II With Tom Hanks, a 20-part documentary series presented by two-time Academy Award-winning actor Tom Hanks, on Tuesday, September 1 at 9 PM.
The History Original coincides with the anniversary of the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939 and examines the conflict through a 21st-century lens. The one-hour episodes offer a human-focused account of the war and its impact on the modern world.
Following the premiere, new episodes will air every Monday and Tuesday at 9 PM on HistoryTV18.
Drawing on rarely seen archival material, historical insights and cinematic storytelling, the series traces the Second World War from Germany’s invasion of Poland through the rise and fall of the Axis powers.
Across 20 episodes, World War II With Tom Hanks covers major battles across land, sea and air, including Stalingrad and Normandy, as well as the Atlantic, Mediterranean and Pacific theatres.
The documentary also examines the human cost of the conflict, including the Holocaust, civilian resistance and life on the home fronts. It explores espionage, code-breaking and industrial mobilisation, while examining the decisions of wartime leaders including Winston Churchill, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Erwin Rommel, Joseph Stalin, Hideki Tojo and Adolf Hitler.
The series follows the experiences of soldiers and civilians across continents and concludes with the emergence of the atomic age and the geopolitical shifts that transformed wartime alliances into Cold War rivalries.
With Tom Hanks, Gary Goetzman and Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Jon Meacham among its executive producers, the series combines historical perspective with a human-centric narrative approach to the conflict.
