Instagram has introduced First Draft, a new in-app feature aimed at making the initial stages of Reel creation faster by automating some of the basic video-editing work for creators.
The feature allows users to select their video clips and generate an initial cut with a single tap. First Draft automatically identifies and removes pauses while trimming clips, giving creators a preliminary version of their Reel within seconds.
The move is aimed at reducing the time creators spend on repetitive editing tasks and helping them move more quickly from raw footage to the creative stage of production.
According to a creator handle announcing the feature, “Introducing First Draft, a new way to create a Reel within the Instagram app.” The creator explained that users can simply select their clips and, with one tap, have pauses removed and clips trimmed to create a starting point for further editing.
Importantly, the edits made through First Draft are reversible. Creators can modify the suggested cuts, adjust individual clips or change their sequence before proceeding with the rest of the Reel creation process. This keeps the automated edit as a starting point rather than a fixed final version.
The feature is designed to address one of the more time-consuming parts of short-form video production: turning a collection of raw clips into a workable first cut. By automating the initial trimming process, Instagram is positioning First Draft as a way for creators to spend less time on technical production and more time developing the creative direction of their content.
The creator post described the feature as a tool that “handles the early video trimming so you can focus less on technical production, and get to the creative part sooner.”
The introduction of First Draft also comes as short-form video continues to be a central part of Instagram’s creator ecosystem. Faster and more accessible editing tools can help lower the production effort involved in publishing Reels, particularly for creators who regularly work with multiple clips.
Rather than replacing the creator’s editing decisions, First Draft provides an automated first pass that can subsequently be refined. The approach gives users a quicker starting point while retaining control over the final sequence and edits.
With First Draft, Instagram is effectively bringing another layer of automated editing into the Reel creation workflow, continuing its broader push to make video creation more accessible within the platform itself.
