New Delhi: Instagram has unveiled its first major wordmark redesign in nearly a decade, modernising the typography that appears at the top of its mobile app while leaving its iconic multicoloured camera logo untouched.
The update was announced by Instagram chief Adam Mosseri, who said the previous wordmark, introduced over 10 years ago, no longer reflected the platform’s evolving design language.
“We updated the Instagram wordmark today, which is more than a decade old and felt dated. We feel the refresh is sharper and more modern, but references the original and has the simplicity and craft that’s always made it Instagram,” Mosseri said in posts on Instagram and Threads.
The redesign replaces Instagram’s long-standing cursive-style lettering with a cleaner, more contemporary typeface that blends traditional typography with subtle script-inspired curves. While the overall appearance has been simplified, several characters—including the ‘s’, ‘r’ and ‘g’—retain stylised flourishes that echo the platform’s original branding.
The refresh is limited to the text-based wordmark displayed at the top of the Instagram app. The company’s instantly recognisable gradient camera icon, introduced as part of its broader brand identity, remains unchanged.
In a separate post accompanying the rollout, Mosseri said, “The wordmark at the top of the app hasn’t changed in 10 years, so it was time for a refresh. Cleaner and more modern, with references to the original and the simplicity and craft that’s always made it Instagram.”
The update reflects Meta’s continued effort to refine the visual identity of its products without disrupting brand recognition. By retaining key design cues from the original lettering while introducing a more streamlined aesthetic, Instagram aims to present a fresher interface that aligns with contemporary design trends while preserving the familiarity users associate with the platform.
The revamped wordmark is now being rolled out within the Instagram app, marking the platform’s first typography overhaul since the previous design was introduced more than a decade ago.
