Mumbai: Vitamin Stree’s latest video, with actor and influencer Rytasha Rathore, aims to start a conversation around body positivity and self-love.
Body Image, one of the few things all girls are acutely aware of since childhood, being constantly reminded how we look – tall, short, fat, skinny, dark, fair, a long list of society approved adjectives, that have done more harm than good, since time immemorial. These, often unattainable, standards cause people who defy them to face immense pressure and insecurity. Often, one slowly starts hating their body after repeatedly being called fat or skinny, obese or bony, a hate that sometimes stays with them all their lives. So, how does one fight these preconceived notions about what a girl’s body should look like? By talking about it, of course.
Rytasha tells us about her journey from hating her body as a child, to learning to love it as she started pursuing her dreams in theatre. She shares with us that moment when for the first time she realised that she did not look like the other kids, looking into the mirror and realising that she’s ‘fat’.’ However, once she joined drama school, and started exploring her body’s grace and expressing through it, she began falling in love with herself. She says, “I don’t think people should put so much focus on physical appearance, it is literally the least important thing.”
Body positivity for Rytasha is “not to hate your body and try to make it the best version of itself.” She firmly believes that after everything, what really matters is the person behind the body, and the growth that lies beyond the physical matter.
