How Will the Proposed Gambling Laws Affect Online Casinos

We all know how popular online gambling has become in all parts of the world. However, India has always been a country with specific gambling regulations. To be precise, for a long time, gambling has been a grey zone. Certain laws related to casinos were established in the past but did not apply to online gambling.

The demand for online casinos has made government officials start looking for ways to regulate the iGaming industry in their country. Over time, there have been multiple approaches to this issue, but neither has turned out to be good for operators and gamblers. However, the latest proposed gambling laws will reshape India’s entire iGaming industry.

In this article, we would like to discuss the changes online casinos in India could face due to the newest gambling regulations.

Self-Regulatory Bodies for Online Casinos in India

In some parts of the world, the government is responsible for regulating the online casinos that offer services within the country. However, it seems that things are going to be different in India. In case the government accepts them, the newest amendments will ensure the appearance of the so-called self-regulatory bodies. These bodies or institutions are not going to be made by government officials. They will be made by online gambling businesses that will develop a set of strict rules for online casinos and gamblers as well.

However, that also doesn’t mean anyone will have the chance to be part of such a regulatory body. Each member must be an eminent person with a long experience and reputation within the iGaming industry. However, people with a good reputation in sports, entertainment, and similar industries will also be included.

Yet, that’s not all. The government expects to find people that are experts in some other fields as well. For instance, board members will also have to be people who have the credibility to work with and understand the behavior of online gamblers. That means there should also be people experts in psychology and consumer education. The central government will nominate that individual (or more of them). That allowance won’t be given to gaming businesses that will also be part of the board.

These are some basic rules you need to understand about these laws. However, just because these laws are still not applied, that doesn’t mean there are no safe online casinos in India. On the contrary, there are many of them licensed by different international regulatory bodies that are completely legit and safe.

As Scott Lawson of Online-Casinos.com covers in his review of the best Indian online casinos, each of these casinos has some specific features that people need to put into consideration. Despite the license, people should also consider the fairness of bonuses these gambling operators offer, the quality of the games, the technology used to protect player data, etc. You may want to check out the opinion of an expert before registering. That way, you can enjoy some online casino games before these laws become official.

Additional Tasks of New Self-Regulatory Body

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology published a few more pieces of information about the proposed laws. These pieces of information refer to the tasks the self-regulatory body will have after the laws become official.

First, after the self-regulatory body is formed, the individuals will develop a set of rules to protect the players from any psychological problem that could appear due to gambling addiction. Generally, that is something we already have in the biggest part of the world.

However, the framework will not only be dedicated to the fight against addiction. It will also cover a set of rules that will protect children from gambling. That means no one younger than the minimum legal age will get the chance to access online casinos. In other words, the gambling sites must ask for identity proof. We are yet to see how that will look, but from what we know, online casinos will probably ask for a picture of ID or any document that confirms the identity of the registered player.

The third task that a framework of laws will have is to reduce the criminal activities that could appear in the online gambling industry. The focus of the regulatory body will be the fight against money laundering and online identity thefts. That means online casinos won’t get approval for work if they do not use the most advanced data protection technology.

Self-Regulatory Body Can Be Suspended

There won’t be excuses for any mistakes a regulatory body could make. The Indian government plans to develop and apply strict rules that everyone involved in the iGaming industry must respect. The self-regulatory body will have deadlines to think of the set of rules that will protect players and control the online casinos offering their services in India. If the rules are not ready by that deadline, the government keeps the right to suspend the existing self-regulatory body and replace its members completely.

On the other hand, the government will also suspend the board if the developed framework of rules is not bringing any positive results. That way, the officials in India want to ensure that everyone is doing their job.

Why Are These Rules Significant for Online Casinos in India?

First of all, we are not sure if the authorities in India will accept the proposed gambling laws. But, for a very long time, the government has been trying to control and maintain the online gambling world. There are multiple reasons for that. They primarily want to ensure that there are no criminal activities within that industry. Apart from that, the officials also want to be sure that all the players within the country are absolutely protected.

It is probably unnecessary to say how huge the Indian market is. It is the most populated country in the world, attracting many online gambling operators to invest in this market. However, many of them haven’t decided on that move for a very simple reason. Investing in an unregulated market is always risky.

That is why we believe these law innovations will attract a huge number of foreign online casinos willing to offer their services to Indian people. If these regulations become official, the iGaming industry will probably explode (it is already on the rise). We are not sure when exactly that will happen, but based on the information we can hear in the mainstream media, everything should be finished by the end of this year. The officials probably need time to find people responsible enough to maintain and control the iGaming industry. But, we are pretty sure a large number of experts are ready to use their knowledge to regulate the entire market.

Conclusion

As you see, something is happening in India’s iGaming industry. For a long period, it seemed that online casinos had not been the government’s main priority. People had the opportunity to gamble at foreign online casinos. But, without appropriate regulations, there was enough space for scammers wanting to damage people, make a profit from their desire to have fun, and, unfortunately, steal people’s data.

You may want to check out the link on this page, where the best casinos in India were analyzed and reviewed. That way, you can be safe until the newest gambling laws become official. We are pretty sure the iGaming industry will explode in 2024, which means things will be much easier for you!
