New Delhi: Marking World Health Day, ZEE News, known for its impactful public-interest journalism has brought national attention to a critical healthcare challenge through its flagship show DNA.
The channel exposed systemic profiteering in the pharmaceutical sector alongside a deeply concerning rise in counterfeit medicines across India. The investigation uncovered how inefficiencies and opacity within the pharmaceutical supply chain from wholesale procurement to retail distribution are enabling excessive mark-ups on essential medicines.
The investigation revealed that essential medicines are being sold at inflated prices, with margins ranging from 200% to over 1000%, despite significantly lower procurement costs. It also exposed the circulation of fake medicines resembling genuine products, including drugs used for critical conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, infections, and heart ailments posing serious risks to patient safety.
The expose prompted swift responses from authorities. Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister and Health Minister Brijesh Pathak assured strict action against those involved, while Delhi Health Minister Pankaj Singh confirmed measures to address irregularities and improve access to affordable medicines. Other agencies have also indicated enforcement action against the counterfeit network.

Rahul Sinha, Managing Editor, Zee News and host of popular show DNA, said the investigation reflects the channel’s commitment to raising awareness, driving accountability, and ensuring transparency in sectors critical to citizens’ daily lives. “At ZEE News, our commitment has always been to keep the people of India informed, aware, and empowered. Through rigorous on-ground reporting and investigative journalism, we strive to highlight issues that directly impact citizens’ daily lives.”
Through DNA, ZEE News has once again reinforced its role as a catalyst for public accountability, demonstrating how journalism can drive tangible action and policy attention.
