Mumbai: Food delivery platform Zomato marked rival Swiggy’s birthday with a minimalist print advertisement in The Times of India, delivering a rare gesture of appreciation that celebrated healthy competition without explicitly naming its competitor.
Set against Swiggy’s signature orange backdrop, the ad read: “this is a zomato ad to wish the other food delivery app a happy birthday. thank you for pushing us to be better :’)”
The campaign deliberately avoided mentioning Swiggy by name, instead relying on distinctive visual cues to make the message instantly recognisable. The understated creative highlighted the competitive yet respectful relationship between the two food delivery platforms.
The print ad also echoed Zomato’s own 18th birthday campaign earlier this year, in which the company similarly omitted its own name and depended on familiar brand identifiers to communicate its message. By mirroring that creative approach, Zomato extended a subtle tribute to its rival while reinforcing its own brand identity.
The campaign has drawn attention for its simple execution and its acknowledgement of competition as a driver of innovation, positioning the birthday message as a celebration of the role both companies have played in shaping India’s online food delivery ecosystem.
