New Delhi: Actress turned producer Anushka Sharma has been in news recently for her second film as producer, ‘Phillauri’. This week on Off Centre, Anuradha SenGupta talks to Anushka Sharmawho puts forth her views on feminism and talks about her career and her personal life.
Commenting on whether feminism in India is at an inflection point, Anushka says, “The concept of feminism is so abused, what people understand about feminism is that this is male hating. People don’t get it, if I am standing up and saying I am a feminist, what I am saying is that I believe in equal rights for men and women. A man can be a feminist, my father is a feminist, and my brother is a feminist. How people react without knowing what it is, that’s the reason why they troll, that’s why they get after you. They are thinking we are getting after them, why would we get after them, we have our own things to do.”
Talking about her life and relationship with Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli, she says, ‘I don’t talk about my personal life because it’s very simple, I have done it in the past and it hasn’t worked out for me. People somehow find your relationship entertainment and it’s not. I want to shield myself, my career and my relationship, at the same time I can’t tell my partner what to do, what he wants to do that’s completely up to him.’
While speaking to Anuradha about being offered the hit movie Sultan, Anushka says, ‘When Aditya Chopra called me and asked if I wanted to do Sultan, I was so scared because I was like why is he calling for Sultan, what am I going to do in Sultan, I didn’t know what the script was about. Ali Abbas Zafar was going to narrate the film to me that night. When he narrated the film, I was like Oh-Ok-Ya. Then I was like there must be something, I am going to read it myself. I told Ali, I am going to read the script and tell him the next morning. I was glad the film came to me.’
