New Delhi: With his upcoming movie Rangoon, the multi-talented filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj has been in news recently. This week on Off Centre, Anuradha SenGupta talks to Vishal Bhardwaj where he openly speaks about a wide range of topics.
In a candid conversation, he discusses not only about his earlier films like Haider but also the law and order situation in the country, issues with CBFC, his relationship with Gulzar and much more.
Commenting on Haider, Vishal says, ‘’More than political it is more ironical, Haider is political also, Kashmir is so relevant, so vulnerable for so long. I had a problem with the kind of films that were made on Kashmir. I thought nobody was trying to see the reality, and one more thing I was upset with my own fraternity of filmmakers that we were always seeing the Kashmir from outside; we never have gone inside and seen from inside. That was exciting and I thought that was required. This conflict has been going on for more than 3 decades.’’
On being asked if he will release Haider today, he says, ‘’No way, these are the times that we think twice before saying anything and even saying this we think twice.’’
On Central Board for Film Certification, Vishal says, ‘We have to be protected by the I&B ministry, the state should protect us. If a film is censored by the CBFC- a government body, then how and why should anyone from a village corner sue us directly? We should be indemnified by the state. After the certificate is issued, there should be a tribunal and you can go directly to the tribunal and sue over there. That person will not come to Delhi and
many things will be taken care of.’
He also adds about his films, ‘’Once my film went to the censor board and one of the members told me that the problem with your films are is that they look real and that’s scary; We don’t want
to see the mirror.’’
