Mumbai: Real-life dating app happn has announced the launch of an industry-first feature that allows users to report AI-generated dating profiles, strengthening its commitment to authenticity and human connection. Rolled out on Safer Internet Day, 10 February, the new feature underscores the platform’s focus on ensuring that online dating remains rooted in real, in-person encounters.
As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly mainstream in India, it is reshaping how individuals present themselves online. From crafting bios and selecting profile photos to generating conversation starters, AI tools are now commonly used by young daters. In fact, over 40% of young Indian daters have reportedly used AI-powered tools to optimise their dating profiles.
However, the rise in AI usage has also contributed to growing concerns around online scams and authenticity. According to industry findings, 51% of Indians or people they know have been approached by AI chatbots posing as real individuals on dating apps, while nearly seven in ten Indian users report having encountered AI-generated fake profiles. The blurring of lines between genuine and fabricated identities has made trust one of the biggest challenges in digital dating.
Against this backdrop, happn has introduced a dedicated reporting option that enables singles to flag profiles suspected of being generated by AI. This allows users to specifically report AI misuse, helping the customer service team prioritise verification of flagged accounts.
The platform has also updated its Trust Charter, which all users must commit to, to explicitly prohibit AI-generated profiles. Members are required to pledge not to use AI tools to generate profile content or messages, reinforcing the app’s stance on maintaining authentic, personal communication.
These measures build on happn’s existing safeguards designed to combat AI-driven fraud. The app deploys technology to analyse profile behaviour, keywords and images to detect suspicious patterns, including the reuse of commonly circulated scam visuals. It also monitors in-app activity that deviates from human behaviour — such as profiles sending one Like per second — enabling near real-time flagging and removal of potentially fraudulent accounts.
All automated systems are supported by a dedicated human moderation team operating 24/7. The team reviews user reports, investigates suspicious activity and responds to member requests, ensuring a balanced approach that combines AI technology with human oversight.

“At happn, our priority has always been to create a safe and authentic space for singles,” says Karima Ben Abdelmalek, CEO of happn. “As AI technology evolves, so must our strategies to protect this authenticity. By using advanced technology to counter AI-generated fraud, we are making a clear choice that dating should remain human. These measures allow us to preserve the integrity of every connection made on the app, and continue to offer a space where people meet as themselves.”
