Indian online gaming industry supports IMSA recognizing poker as a Mind Sport

Mumbai: In a landmark development, the International Mind Sports Association (IMSA) has officially recognized poker as a Mind Sport, solidifying its place alongside intellectual disciplines like chess and e-sports. This historic achievement, led by the World Poker Federation (WPF), is the culmination of years of advocacy by global players, professionals, and federations. The recognition is expected to fuel the growth of poker through standardized rules, global competitions, and enhanced professional opportunities.

Championing the move, Roland Landers, CEO of the All India Gaming Federation (AIGF), said, “As the apex body of online gaming in India, the All India Gaming Federation has consistently championed games of skill, including poker. This recognition reaffirms what we have long advocated: poker is a discipline that demands not only skill and strategy but also intellectual rigour. Indian jurisprudence has long recognized poker as a game of skill, and this global development further validates that position. This step not only reinforces the intellectual and strategic elements of poker but also strengthens its credibility within both the global and Indian contexts. It is a significant move forward for players, platforms, and the industry as a whole, enhancing the recognition and growth of poker as a respected sport.”

India’s leading online poker platform, PokerBaazi, is proud to celebrate this achievement. Navkiran Singh, Founder & CEO of Baazi Games (PokerBaazi), expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “We are grateful to the International Mind Sports Association for officially recognizing Poker as a Mind Sport. This milestone is the result of years of combined efforts from a global community that has always known Poker is more than just a game – it’s a sport of skill, strategy, and intellect. For the millions of poker players worldwide, and particularly in India, where the game is witnessing incredible growth, this recognition will now serve as a powerful catalyst for its future. It will not only strengthen poker’s global standing but also open doors for new opportunities, ensuring a bright future for players and the game itself.”

India’s poker industry has seen remarkable growth in recent years, with an expanding community of players, innovative platforms, and increasing recognition of poker as a skill-based game. This IMSA recognition comes at a time when the industry is undergoing exponential expansion, driven by technological advancements and growing player interest. The future of poker is set to be a dynamic one, as this recognition solidifies its place as a respected Mind Sport on both national and international stages.
