Mumbai: India has reached a major milestone in its digital journey, with the country’s broadband subscriber base crossing the 1 billion (100 crore) mark in November 2025, according to data released by the Press Information Bureau on January 1, 2026.
The broadband user base has grown more than six-fold over the past decade—from 131.49 million (13.15 crore) subscribers to 100.37 crore—driven by rapid expansion of high-speed internet infrastructure, affordable data plans, and sustained efforts by both the government and private sector to bridge the digital divide across urban and rural regions.
The surge highlights the growing role of broadband connectivity as a foundational pillar of India’s digital economy. Improved access to high-speed internet has transformed communication, education, commerce, and public service delivery, while enabling the expansion of sectors such as e-commerce, telemedicine, online education, fintech, and digital governance.
India’s broadband footprint now ranks among the largest globally, reinforcing its position as a fast-growing digital ecosystem. The expansion aligns with the government’s Digital India vision, which focuses on providing affordable, reliable, and high-quality internet access to citizens nationwide, while promoting inclusive socio-economic development.
As broadband adoption continues to accelerate, India is expected to further strengthen its digital infrastructure to support next-generation technologies and innovation-led growth, enhancing the country’s global competitiveness in the digital era.
