Mumbai: IndiGo has named global aviation veteran William Walsh as its new Chief Executive Officer, signalling a strategic push to strengthen its leadership as the airline prepares for its next phase of expansion in an increasingly competitive international market.
Walsh, currently serving as Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), will take over the role by early August, following the conclusion of his tenure at the global airline body on July 31. His appointment brings decades of international aviation experience, including leading major airlines and navigating complex operational environments.
The leadership transition comes shortly after Pieter Elbers stepped down as CEO on March 10, 2026, just three months after IndiGo experienced network-wide flight disruptions. The change at the top reflects the airline’s intent to stabilise operations while sharpening its long-term growth strategy.
Welcoming the appointment, IndiGo Chairman Vikram Singh highlighted Walsh’s extensive leadership credentials and deep understanding of large-scale airline operations. He noted that Walsh’s experience in managing complexity and driving performance across global carriers positions him well to steer IndiGo through a rapidly evolving aviation landscape.
Walsh, in his response, emphasised IndiGo’s strong market positioning and growth potential. He said the aviation sector is undergoing significant transformation and expressed confidence in the airline’s ability to remain at the forefront of this shift. He also underscored his focus on fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and sustainable value creation across the organisation.
As IndiGo continues to expand its international footprint and enhance operational resilience, the appointment underscores the airline’s focus on experienced global leadership to navigate industry headwinds and capitalise on emerging opportunities.
