Thiruvananthapuram: The Bar Council of Kerala (BCK) has issued a show cause notice to advocate Happymon Babu after a social media video allegedly promoting his legal services went viral.
The BCK said the video violated the Advocates Act, 1961, Bar Council of India (BCI) Rules, and recent BCI directives prohibiting online promotion by lawyers. Babu has been asked to respond within 15 days.
The clip featured a woman urging people with matrimonial, property, or criminal cases to contact Babu. Denying involvement, Babu told Bar & Bench, “The video was made by an online PR agency using AI and uploaded without my consent. I immediately asked them to take it down.”
He added, “I have never advertised or done any marketing strategy. All my cases come through goodwill, contacts, or references.”
Calling the incident “unfortunate,” Babu said, “I respect the dignity of this noble profession and will take extra care to ensure such acts never occur.”
The controversy comes amid repeated warnings from bar councils across India against lawyers using social media for self-promotion.
