Mumbai: LVL Zero, backed by MIXI Global Investments, Nazara Technologies, and Chimera VC, has received over 240 applications for its inaugural cohort, underscoring a surge in India’s early-stage gaming startup ecosystem.
The applications reflect a new wave of micro-studio formation and increasing ambition among Indian founders to build globally competitive gaming products. Submissions span across mobile, PC, console, and gaming infrastructure, indicating a diversified and evolving ecosystem.
A key trend emerging from the applicant pool is the rise of newly formed studios, with nearly 46.9% established in 2025 and 66.8% founded in 2024 or later. Most teams are small, with a median size of three to four members, highlighting how modern tools, game engines, and AI are enabling lean teams to build scalable products.
From a development standpoint, 46.9% of applicants are at the prototype stage, while 19.5% are in alpha, 11.2% in beta, and 11.6% already have live products. This points to a strong early-stage pipeline transitioning from experimentation to execution.
The data also signals a shift in platform ambition, with 58.5% of applicants building for PC and 36.1% targeting console platforms, reflecting a growing push toward high-production-value gaming experiences. However, mobile-first studios continue to demonstrate faster go-to-market cycles, with nearly 25% already having live products.
Another notable trend is the increasing integration of live-service and data-driven design principles. Over 30% of applicants are embedding retention metrics, analytics, and user acquisition strategies into their products from the outset, marking a shift toward more structured and scalable game development approaches.
AI adoption is also gaining traction, with approximately 22.8% of applicants incorporating AI or machine learning into their development pipelines. Among infrastructure startups, nearly half are leveraging AI for player analytics, personalisation, and growth automation.
Culturally rooted content is emerging as a strong theme, with around 36% of applications drawing inspiration from Indian mythology, folklore, and narratives—primarily targeting PC and console platforms for global audiences.
Geographically, the applicant base spans key hubs including Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Pune, Chennai, and Delhi NCR, collectively accounting for nearly half of the applications.
Commenting on the trends, Sagar Nair said, “What the applicant pool shows clearly is that India’s gaming ecosystem is entering a new formation phase. We are seeing a surge of small, ambitious studios building across multiple platforms, experimenting with new technologies, and thinking about global audiences from day one. The challenge now is not creativity or ambition, it is execution. The next generation of Indian studios will be defined by how effectively they convert strong prototypes into scalable products, and that is exactly the gap LVL Zero is designed to address.”
LVL Zero’s inaugural cohort will select 10 startups, each receiving an equity-free grant of USD 10,000, along with access to a 100-day execution-focused program aimed at accelerating product development and market readiness. The initiative will provide structured mentorship and ecosystem support to help founders transition from prototypes to commercially viable products.
Over the next five years, LVL Zero aims to support more than 100 gaming and interactive startups, positioning India as a key hub for global game development and innovation.
