Redmond, Washington: In a major leadership restructuring, Microsoft has appointed longtime sales leader Judson Althoff as Chief Executive Officer of its Commercial Business, expanding his role to oversee the company’s marketing and operations. The reorganization, announced by CEO Satya Nadella in an internal email to employees on October 1, is aimed at freeing up Nadella and Microsoft’s engineering teams to focus more intensely on artificial intelligence (AI), data center expansion, and next-generation product innovation.
Althoff, who joined Microsoft in 2013, previously served as Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer, leading the company’s global sales organization and building Microsoft Customer and Partner Solutions (MCAPS) into a key growth engine. Under his expanded mandate, Althoff will unify sales, marketing, operations, and partner engagement, reflecting Microsoft’s intent to drive closer alignment between customer needs and delivery execution.
Takeshi Numoto, Microsoft’s Chief Marketing Officer, will join the newly created commercial business unit, reporting directly to Althoff while continuing to report to Nadella on corporate marketing, business planning, and brand communications. The company’s operations organization will also now report to Althoff, further streamlining business processes and accountability.
In his email, Nadella underscored the urgency of the company’s transformation amid what he called a “tectonic AI platform shift,” emphasizing the need to balance operational excellence with innovation.
“This isn’t just evolution—it’s reinvention, for each of us professionally and for Microsoft,” Nadella wrote. “We have a unique opportunity to help our customers and the world realize the promise of AI by combining human capital with new capabilities.”
The shake-up also signals a strategic redistribution of responsibilities at the top. Nadella said the new structure will allow him and Microsoft’s engineering leaders to “be laser focused on our highest ambition technical work—across datacenter buildout, systems architecture, AI science, and product innovation.”
Althoff’s elevation comes shortly after his return from an eight-week sabbatical. Before joining Microsoft, he held senior leadership roles at Oracle and EMC, bringing decades of experience in enterprise technology and global sales strategy.
The move is widely seen as part of Microsoft’s broader effort to accelerate AI adoption across commercial and public sector clients, positioning the company as the preferred partner for digital transformation at scale.
As Nadella put it, “General purpose technologies like AI drive step changes in productivity and GDP growth—and we’re at the forefront of that transformation.”
With this restructuring, Microsoft signals its intent to operate with tighter integration between engineering innovation and customer delivery, ensuring it maintains momentum in the increasingly competitive AI landscape.
