The 94th academy award witnessed one of the shocking moments in history after actor Will Smith went up to the stage and slapped Chris Rock on the face. Smith, who won the best actor award entered into an onstage altercation with Rock after the comic made a joke about the actor’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith’s hairstyle.
Jada Pinkett Smith has been battling the autoimmune disorder alopecia, which causes hair loss and balding. Smith walked on stage and struck Rock before returning to his seat and shouting back at him to keep his wife’s name out of his jokes.
Smith picked up the first Oscar of his career for playing the father of tennis legends Venus and Serena Williams in King Richard. He later apologized to the Academy and all his fellow nominees during a tearful acceptance speech for best actor.
