Mumbai: Press Trust of India (PTI) has elevated Amanpreet Singh to the role of Managing Editor, effective January 1, 2026, marking a key move in the news agency’s ongoing efforts to strengthen editorial leadership across its operations.
The appointment was communicated to employees by PTI’s Chief Executive Officer and Editor-in-Chief, Vijay Joshi, who said the leadership changes form part of a broader newsroom restructuring that has been under consideration for the past six months. The initiative aims to reinforce oversight across both PTI’s text and photo newsrooms amid a rapidly evolving media environment.
Singh joins PTI from Hindustan Times, where he served as Deputy Executive Editor and was responsible for overseeing the daily edition. A recipient of the Ramnath Goenka Award, Singh brings wide-ranging editorial experience spanning macroeconomics, legal affairs, data-led journalism and long-form reporting. He is also trained as a lawyer, adding depth to his editorial portfolio.
In his internal communication, Joshi also acknowledged the newsroom’s performance over the past year, noting that PTI continued to deliver accurate, balanced and credible journalism through a challenging 2025.
The leadership transition coincides with the upcoming retirement of senior editor Sudhakar Nair, who is set to step down on March 31, 2026, after nearly five decades with the organisation. Joshi described Nair as a central pillar of PTI’s journalism and said he will remain in his role in the interim to ensure a smooth handover and to help Singh familiarise himself with PTI’s editorial processes and organisational culture.
Nair began his career at PTI in 1979 as a trainee sub-editor in New Delhi. Over the course of 47 years, he has contributed to thousands of major stories across national and state politics and also served as PTI’s correspondent in Germany between 1998 and 2001.
The changes underline PTI’s focus on continuity and leadership depth as it adapts its newsroom structure for the next phase of growth.
