The popularity of anything can be channeled for good. Sport is no exception. This men’s FIFA World Cup has seen political statements being made ranging from Iran to Palestine and beyond. Morocco has put the African continent on the world’s football map. Sporting spirit was on show on the field and off it. Among millions who watched the World Cup were 250,000 displaced, mostly from Somalia, at a refugee camp in Kenya. It is already Messi’s World Cup. The final could mark his moment of ultimate glory. Irrespective, the human race has emerged the winner thanks to the beautiful game.
