WPP Media promotes Shekhar Banerjee; Ajay Gupte steps down

Mumbai: WPP Media has elevated Shekhar Banerjee to the role of President, Client Solutions – South Asia, reinforcing its focus on deepening client partnerships and delivering integrated, future-ready media solutions.

Banerjee succeeds Ajay Gupte, who has stepped down from the role following a long and successful tenure with the organisation.

Banerjee’s journey with WPP Media began in 2018 when he joined as Managing Partner – West at Wavemaker India. In this role, he was instrumental in strengthening client relationships, building high-performing teams, and driving regional business growth. In 2023, he was elevated to Chief Client Officer – West, North and East at Wavemaker India, where he led with a strong focus on client-centricity, talent development, and innovative media thinking.

The leadership transition also marks the conclusion of Ajay Gupte’s association with WPP Media, which began in 2011. During his tenure across South East Asia and India, Gupte played a pivotal role in scaling the organisation and establishing Wavemaker as one of India’s most sought-after media agencies.

Commenting on the appointment, Prasanth Kumar, CEO – South Asia, WPP Media, said that Banerjee’s elevation comes at a time when clients are increasingly seeking integrated and data-led solutions that deliver measurable business outcomes. He noted that Banerjee has consistently led product delivery across digital and offline channels, championed talent growth, and driven impactful campaigns that have earned strong client trust across industries.

Kumar also acknowledged Gupte’s contribution, thanking him for his leadership and support in shaping the organisation, and wishing him well for his future endeavours.

Speaking on his new role, Banerjee said that the convergence of creativity, data, and technology is unlocking powerful new possibilities at WPP Media. He added that he looks forward to working closely with teams to build solutions that deliver meaningful value to clients and help propel the company into its next phase of growth, while thanking clients for their continued trust and partnership.

Reflecting on his journey, Gupte said that his 15-year association with WPP Media, spanning multiple roles, had been deeply enriching. He expressed gratitude for the opportunities, challenges, and relationships that shaped his career, and thanked colleagues for being part of the journey as he looks ahead to new chapters.
