Dolby powers India’s entertainment evolution with premium experiences across formats and platforms: Sameer Seth
Share Share ShareShare

From the silver screen to the smartphone, Dolby has become synonymous with immersive entertainment experiences across the world—and India is no exception. With a legacy of innovation, Dolby continues to play a transformative role in how stories are seen and heard, creating a powerful impact across cinemas, living rooms, and personal devices alike.

As entertainment consumption in India undergoes a dynamic shift, Dolby stands at the intersection of technology and storytelling. Through pioneering technologies like Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision, and strong collaborations with filmmakers, OTT platforms, OEMs, and studios, Dolby has redefined the gold standard of audio-visual excellence.

In this exclusive interaction, we speak with Sameer Seth, Director, Marketing – India at Dolby Laboratories, to explore how Dolby is driving the future of entertainment in India. From empowering creators and enhancing cinematic storytelling to bridging the gap between theatrical and streaming experiences, Sameer offers a deep dive into Dolby’s strategy, impact, and vision for a truly immersive future.

1) Dolby has played a pivotal role in shaping the entertainment experience in India. What has been the key to Dolby’s success in building such a strong presence across multiple platforms — from cinemas to home entertainment and now mobile devices?

From movies and TV shows, to apps, music, sports, and gaming, Dolby unlocks the power of sight and sound in the pursuit of awe inspiring experiences that transform how we connect with each other and the world arounds us. We enable artists, storytellers, developers, and businesses with innovative technologies to help them realize their full potential, connect more deeply to audiences, and deliver transformational experiences for billions around the world. Our success in India is built on deep collaborations across the entertainment ecosystem —enabling seamless access to Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision across lifestyles that include cinemas, homes, on-the-go devices, at work and now in automotive. By setting industry benchmarks in premium audio-visual experiences, we aim to elevate storytelling, making every frame and sound richer, more dynamic, and deeply engaging.

2) Dolby has built strong partnerships with OEMs. How do these collaborations help enhance consumer experiences, and what trends are you seeing in device innovation?

Our partnerships with leading OEMs ensure that Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision are seamlessly integrated into TVs, soundbars, AVRs, smart speakers, STBs, smartphones, TWS, tablets laptops, and now cars, bringing cinematic experiences into everyday devices. Today, consumers expect high-quality entertainment on the go, and our collaboration with the content community, services, and OEMs meets this demand by making immersive audio and stunning visuals more accessible. A key trend we’re seeing is the rapid adoption of Dolby experiences across various types and a wide range of price segments in devices, allowing more consumers to enjoy premium experiences in their favorite ways and within budget.

3) Dolby collaborates with major OTT platforms like Netflix and Disney+ Hotstar. How do you ensure that creative intent is preserved across various devices to deliver a consistent, immersive experience?

One of Dolby’s core principles is ensuring that audiences experience content as intended by its creators. By working closely with OTT platforms, we ensure that Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos-enabled content is optimized across all devices, from premium home theaters to mobile screens. These technologies are designed to automatically adapt to your device and platform to give you a premium entertainment experience as creators intended. This guarantees a consistent, immersive experience for audiences wherever they choose to watch.

4) Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision have redefined cinematic storytelling in India. How are you working with filmmakers and production houses to push the boundaries of sound and visuals?

Dolby collaborates with filmmakers and studios to elevate storytelling through immersive sound and visuals. Recently, we announced to bring Dolby Cinema to India, a premium cinema experience for moviegoers. A crucial step in bringing Dolby Cinema to India has been ensuring filmmakers have access to world-class post-production facilities. In addition to 24 Dolby Atmos theatrical mix facilities in India, Dolby recently collaborated with Annapurna Studios in Hyderabad, to setup India’s first Dolby Vision colour grading facility for cinema, empowering Indian filmmakers with cutting-edge tools to enhance their visual storytelling. This milestone provides creators with cutting-edge tools to preserve creative intent and deliver unparalleled audiovisual experiences across theaters and home entertainment. With Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision, Indian filmmakers continue to craft compelling narratives that captivate audiences on every platform.

5) While Dolby technologies are widely recognized in premium content, how is Dolby working to educate consumers about its value in everyday entertainment devices?

Educating consumers is a key focus for us. Through co-marketing campaigns with partner brands, and collaboration with content creators, we help audiences understand how Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision transform their entertainment experiences. Whether it’s a blockbuster movie, a sports event, or a music album, we emphasize how our innovations enhance clarity, depth, and immersion. Additionally, as more mainstream devices integrate Dolby innovations, consumers are experiencing firsthand how premium audio and visuals can elevate their everyday entertainment. Our recent campaign for example with Samsung “Foley – Sound Meets Story”, is a five-episode series that showcases the power of Dolby Atmos in creating immersive audio experiences.

6) What initiatives are you taking to empower creators with the tools and knowledge needed to optimize their content using Dolby’s technologies?

At Dolby, we are committed to equipping sound engineers, colourists, technicians, and post-production professionals with the tools and expertise needed to bring their creative vision to life. Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision set new benchmarks in spatial sound and ultra-vivid visuals, enabling creators to deliver content with unparalleled depth, clarity, and realism—just as they intended. By working closely with studios, production houses, and artists, we ensure that creators can leverage Dolby’s innovations to enhance storytelling, evoke emotion, and craft truly immersive experiences across movies, episodic content, music, podcast, and more.
Additionally, we celebrate and support top-tier talent through initiatives like the Dolby Atmos Music Mix Engineers Honours Club, a rewards program for music mix engineers in India, Thailand, and MENA who have significantly contributed to immersive sound mixing. This initiative fosters a thriving community of experts, reinforcing Dolby’s commitment to advancing creative excellence and innovation in entertainment.

7) Looking ahead, what key trends do you foresee in the Indian entertainment landscape, and how is Dolby positioned to influence this evolution?

The Indian entertainment landscape is evolving rapidly, with audiences demanding more immersive and high-quality experiences. We see strong momentum in theatrical storytelling, the growth of premium streaming content, and the increasing adoption of immersive audio and HDR capabilities in everyday devices. UGC on mobile, in-car infotainment, gaming, and regional content are also emerging as key drivers of innovation. As a leader in immersive entertainment experiences, Dolby is uniquely positioned to support this evolution by continuing to collaborate with industry stakeholders, enabling content creators, and ensuring audiences can experience entertainment in its most powerful and authentic form.

Dolby enables creators with powerful tools and training, allowing them to craft deeply immersive stories across music, film, podcasts, and streaming content.

Through brand collaborations, campaigns, and real-world use cases, we help consumers see how Dolby technologies elevate everyday entertainment experiences in powerful ways.

By equipping filmmakers with cutting-edge tools like Dolby Vision grading and Atmos mixing, we empower immersive storytelling that resonates powerfully in every format.

Partnerships with OEMs bring Dolby experiences to TVs, phones, soundbars, and cars, making immersive entertainment accessible across budgets and device types.
