Chennai: Widespread concern has been raised over the sudden and unexplained blackout of Puthiya Thalaimurai on the Tamil Nadu Arasu Cable TV Corporation (TACTV) network across the state.
Since last Friday, viewers across Tamil Nadu have reported that the channel, usually available on Channel No. 44, has disappeared from the Arasu Cable lineup. Complaints have poured in from several districts, with many questioning whether the channel has been deliberately removed from the state-run cable network.
Despite multiple representations by Puthiya Thalaimurai’s technical and administrative teams to Arasu Cable officials on October 3, 4, 5, and 6, there has been no official explanation or clarification for the disruption. The continued silence from the authorities, despite repeated communication, has raised serious questions about accountability and transparency.
Observers have pointed out that as a government-owned service provider, Tamil Nadu Arasu Cable has a responsibility to act as a neutral carrier ensuring equitable access to all licensed channels. Any interruption or selective blocking without clear justification undermines the principles of press freedom, fair access, and the public’s right to information.
Puthiya Thalaimurai, known for its independent and people-focused journalism, has been a trusted news source for Tamil audiences since its inception. The disruption of its telecast has therefore sparked concerns about interference with the free functioning of an independent media outlet.
The channel has called on the Government of Tamil Nadu to clarify whether any directive or technical intervention led to the blackout and urged Tamil Nadu Arasu Cable TV Corporation to immediately restore the telecast and provide a transparent explanation.
It has also appealed to industry and regulatory bodies to ensure fair, non-discriminatory access for all broadcasters on public networks.
The incident has reignited debate around media independence and the importance of safeguarding the freedom of the press — a constitutional right that remains central to India’s democratic fabric.
