Bengaluru: Freedom Sunflower Oil, an edible oil brand, has launched a nationwide consumer awareness campaign featuring cricket legend Rahul Dravid, aimed at empowering customers to verify the correct quantity of oil in 1 Litre pouches. The campaign highlights that each pouch should contain 910 gm of edible oil, as mandated by The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Government of India.
The initiative seeks to address ambiguous market practices, where some manufacturers provide pouches that appear to be 1 Litre but contain less oil. To demonstrate this, GEF India—the makers of Freedom Sunflower Oil—joined forces with Mr. Dependable, Rahul Dravid, to compare the weight of oil in various market pouches. Each pack was placed on a weighing scale, revealing that while some competitors’ pouches fell short of 910 gm, Freedom Sunflower Oil consistently met or exceeded the required standard. This effort underscores the importance of adopting the ‘Pack Review System’ (PRS), encouraging consumers to check the weight of oil every time they purchase a pouch.
The campaign also promotes simple consumer habits such as reading labels carefully, comparing net quantity with price, and verifying products before purchase, reinforcing honesty and transparency in the market.
Rahul Dravid said, “I congratulate GEF India for taking this important initiative to educate and empower consumers by introducing the concept of ‘Pack Review System’ (PRS) and making customers the third umpire to prevent them from being misled. As aptly put ‘Oil should be less in the food and not in the pack’. Only an aware consumer can get it by adopting PRS.”
