Mumbai: In a significant enforcement action against digital piracy led by JioStar’s complaint, the Cyber Crime Police, Kolkata, conducted a raid targeting an illegal streaming application identified as “Vedu”. The application was involved in the unauthorized distribution of copyrighted content, including films, web series, and live sports content.
Based on the FIR registered at Kolkata Police Cyber PS, the accused had allegedly developed and operated the “Vedu” application to illegally host, stream, and distribute video-on-demand content and live sports broadcasts without authorization, including content belonging to JioStar platforms.
During the operation, authorities seized key digital infrastructure used in the piracy operation, including one laptop, two mobile phones, along with a router and modem, indicating the technical setup used to facilitate unauthorized streaming.
The FIR further notes that the application monetised its operations through in-app advertising networks, thereby generating revenue from the illegal dissemination of copyrighted content.
Following the enforcement action, the “Vedu” application is currently non-functional and offline, effectively disrupting access to the infringing service. The case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Copyright Act, 1957, the Information Technology Act, 2000, and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and remains under investigation.
This development underscores continued enforcement action against app-based piracy ecosystems and reflects ongoing coordination between rights holders and law enforcement agencies to curb unauthorized digital distribution of premium content.
