Mumbai: Meta has announced a new set of safety enhancements designed to strengthen protections for teens across Instagram, Facebook and Messenger, introducing expanded age-appropriate experiences, AI-powered age assurance technologies and new parental alerts aimed at supporting teen wellbeing.
The latest updates reflect Meta’s continued focus on ensuring that teenagers are placed in safer digital environments by default while giving parents greater visibility and oversight into their teen’s online activity.

Talking about the global rollout of these features, Natasha Jog, Director, Public Policy, Meta, India said, “Keeping teens safe is one of our most important priorities, and these updates from, 13+ content settings across Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger, to AI-powered age detection and new parental alerts — reflect our commitment to building age-appropriate experiences by default.”
As part of the update, Meta is rolling out its 13+ content settings globally across Teen Accounts on Instagram, Facebook and Messenger. Inspired by movie-rating criteria and informed by parent feedback, the feature is designed to ensure teens are shown age-appropriate content by default.
On Facebook, the setting is intended to limit exposure to inappropriate content across Feed and Reels while restricting teens’ interactions with Profiles, Pages, Groups and Events that primarily post unsuitable content. On Messenger, teens will face limitations when viewing links to inappropriate Facebook content or interacting with accounts that predominantly share such material.
Meta is also expanding its AI-powered age assurance measures to help identify underage users and place them into appropriate experiences. The company said its systems go beyond declared age and analyse broader contextual signals from profiles, including references in posts, comments, captions and bios.
The company is additionally introducing visual analysis capabilities designed to support age detection efforts. According to Meta, the technology evaluates broad visual indicators from images and videos to estimate general age ranges and does not rely on facial recognition or identify individuals. These capabilities are expected to expand across additional surfaces including Instagram Reels, Instagram Live and Facebook Groups.
In another significant update aimed at supporting teen wellbeing, Instagram will begin notifying parents using supervision tools if their teen repeatedly searches for terms related to suicide or self-harm within a short period of time. The feature is being rolled out for supervising parents in India, Brazil and the European Union, with notifications beginning immediately to raise awareness of the new support mechanism.
Meta is also consolidating parental supervision tools through Family Center, creating a central destination where parents can manage and oversee teen experiences across Instagram, Facebook, Messenger and Meta Horizon without switching between multiple apps and settings.
The company said that in the coming months, Family Center will also introduce broader visibility into teen activity across Meta’s platforms, including aggregated time-spent insights.
The latest updates underline Meta’s broader effort to combine AI-driven safeguards, age-appropriate defaults and parental controls to create safer digital experiences for younger users across its ecosystem.
