Mumbai: Industrialist Anil Ambani has approached the Bombay High Court, filing a defamation suit against Republic TV and its editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami, alleging sustained reputational damage arising from the network’s coverage and digital publications.
The plea seeks an injunction against further dissemination of what Ambani describes as defamatory content, arguing that repeated reportage and commentary have harmed his public image across both broadcast and social media platforms. The matter is slated for hearing on April 1 before a single-judge bench led by Justice Milind Jadhav.
Dispute Over Alleged Misrepresentation
At the core of the dispute is the channel’s reporting on investigations by the Enforcement Directorate involving entities such as Reliance Communications, Reliance Home Finance, and Reliance Commercial Finance. Ambani’s petition underscores that these companies operate as separate legal entities and contends that he was not involved in their day-to-day management or decision-making processes.
The filing highlights that Ambani stepped down as a non-executive director of Reliance Communications in November 2019, asserting that the defendants were fully aware of this fact yet continued to associate him directly with ongoing regulatory proceedings.
Allegations of “Irreparable Damage”
The suit accuses the defendants of “malicious and irresponsible” journalism, alleging that their content created a misleading narrative linking Ambani personally to financial irregularities under investigation. It further claims that the coverage employed sensationalised language and defamatory descriptors, including allegations of fraud and financial misconduct.
According to the petition, such portrayals have contributed to a “false perception of guilt,” exposing Ambani to public ridicule and causing significant harm to both his professional standing and personal reputation.
Legal and Financial Implications
Ambani is seeking legal remedy for what he describes as “wrongful and mala fide” actions, arguing that the conduct of Republic TV and Goswami resulted in tangible reputational and financial damage. The suit emphasises that the legal action aims not only to halt further alleged defamation but also to secure redress for losses incurred.
The case is expected to draw wider attention within media and corporate circles, particularly amid ongoing debates around editorial responsibility, investigative reporting, and the legal boundaries of media commentary in high-stakes financial matters.
