Mumbai: Comet, India’s homegrown sneaker label known for combining cultural storytelling with design-led innovation, has unveiled ‘Maachis’, a new sneaker concept inspired by vintage Indian matchboxes and featuring what the company describes as the world’s first sneaker equipped with a functional match striker.
Positioned as more than a footwear release, Maachis brings together nostalgia, interactive design and contemporary craftsmanship in a campaign designed to spark conversation and reimagine everyday cultural symbols.
Inspired by the visual identity of classic Indian matchboxes, the sneaker is crafted in beige suede with bold red detailing, graphic elements and typography that draw from vintage packaging aesthetics. Comet said the design seeks to reinterpret a familiar household object into a modern expression of style and storytelling.
The defining feature of the sneaker is concealed beneath the heel tab—a functional striker strip designed to light a matchstick, turning the shoe into an interactive experience.
The concept references a cinematic image familiar across generations—the act of striking a matchstick against a shoe, often seen in Western cinema and recently popularised in Indian pop culture through the film Dhurandhar, where Ranveer Singh performs a similar visual moment.
Extending the storytelling beyond the product itself, Maachis is packaged inside a life-sized matchbox-inspired container designed to recreate the tactile experience of opening a traditional box of matches. Custom butter paper and vintage-inspired design elements further reinforce the nostalgic narrative.
The accompanying campaign centres around revealing the hidden striker strip beneath the heel tab and demonstrating the product’s interactive functionality, reinforcing Comet’s approach of blending product design with experiential storytelling.

Speaking about the launch, Utkarsh Gupta, Co Founder of Comet shared, “The artwork on a Maachis is beautiful. It’s something so familiar, yet full of character and nostalgia. With Maachis, we wanted to reinterpret that everyday object in a way that feels playful, nostalgic, and completely unexpected. Every detail, from the vintage-inspired graphics to the life-sized matchbox packaging and the functional striker strip, was designed to create moments of discovery. It’s a sneaker that tells a story, starts conversations, and invites people to experience design beyond aesthetics.”
Known for integrating narrative into product creation, Comet said Maachis reflects its continued focus on combining cultural references with unconventional design thinking.
With this launch, the brand aims to transform a familiar object into an immersive design experience—one that celebrates nostalgia while pushing the boundaries of product innovation in the lifestyle and sneaker space.
