São Paulo: Droga5 São Paulo has launched the second phase of its ‘Lifeless Flag’ campaign for SOS Oceano, aimed at raising awareness around marine and coastal protection in Brazil through a series of handcrafted screen-printed artworks.
Originally introduced at Rio Ocean Week 2025, the campaign began by removing the blue and green elements from the Brazilian flag to symbolise the interdependence of ocean and land ecosystems. The second phase builds on this concept by reinterpreting the flag through six unique artworks created using natural mineral pigments.
Developed in collaboration with Black Madre Studio and Joules & Joules Laboratory, the series draws inspiration from Brazilian naturalist iconography. Each piece pairs marine and terrestrial flora and fauna—from the Amazon Rainforest to the humpback whale—highlighting the interconnectedness of ecosystems, with the yellow diamond of the Brazilian flag serving as a central visual motif.
“The beginning of this project showed that design can condense a complex environmental truth into a single, felt symbol,” says Diego Limberti, Chief Design Officer at Droga5 São Paulo. “In this phase, the elements of the flag remain part of the campaign’s visual process, but they are now reinterpreted to emphasize the animals that live in marine parks and their relationship with the forest. One biome depends on the other, and this is highlighted by the colors of Brazil’s greatest symbol.”
The campaign leverages screen printing as its primary medium, chosen for its ability to deliver chromatic precision and layered ink application, while also reinforcing the artisanal narrative of the project. The use of natural pigments aligns with the campaign’s environmental ethos, with extensive research conducted to achieve accurate tones without synthetic solvents.
“The project is rooted in color theory. When we say ‘without blue there is no green,’ we’re working with the fundamental logic of primary and secondary colors: blue and yellow create green”, says André Maciel, Creative Director at Black Madre Studio.
The initiative was developed in partnership with WALK, Droga5’s impact innovation hub, which integrates data-driven methodologies and creative strategy to address social and environmental issues. Through ‘Lifeless Flag,’ the agency continues to blend design, sustainability, and storytelling to drive awareness and engagement around critical conservation challenges.
