There are officially over three billion internet users globally, research from InternetLiveStats has found: 41 per cent of the world’s population of 7.2 billion.
Further research from We Are Social’s Digital Snapshot found that 2014 has seen steady growth in internet usage, with current trends suggesting that global users are increasing by more than five per cent year-on-year.
It was also found that there are 3.6 billion unique mobile users.
Said Simon Kemp, regional managing partner for Asia at We Are Social: “It’s important to note that the average mobile user still maintains more than two active mobile subscriptions, and global mobile penetration still hovers around the 50 per cent mark.
“Mobile continues to register impressive growth around the world too, with GSMA Intelligence registering almost one million new unique users every day since our last report – that’s more than 11 new users every second.
“This trend is mirrored by the continuing rise of mobile social networking too, with data from Facebook, Tencent and VKontakte indicating that more than 80 per cent of the world’s social media users now access via mobile devices.”
We Are Social found that there are just over two billion active social accounts, with 1.6 billion mobile social accounts.
Statista has reported that roughly three-quarters of the world’s three billion users access the internet via mobile devices.
