Mumbai: Hungama OTT has announced the launch of its latest original series, Begum of Crime, marking a bold addition to its content slate with a female-led crime thriller that explores ambition, survival and the cost of power. Featuring Sana Makbul in a never-seen-before avatar, the series delves into the psychology of relentless aspiration and the fine line between empowerment and destruction.
At the heart of the narrative is Divya, portrayed by Sana Makbul, a character who defies the conventional heroine archetype. Fierce, flawed and unapologetically driven, Divya leaves behind the safety of her home determined to build a life on her own terms. As she navigates a world that consistently underestimates her, each setback fuels her resolve, while each compromise pulls her deeper into moral ambiguity. What begins as a fight for survival gradually evolves into a darker quest for power, where deception becomes currency, manipulation becomes armour, and betrayal and violence mark her ascent.
Sharing her thoughts on playing Divya, Sana Makbul said, “I’ve been waiting for the right project to mark my OTT debut, and Begum of Crime felt like the perfect choice. Divya is bold, unapologetic, and dangerously determined. She operates in grey shades; you don’t always agree with her. As an actor, it was emotionally challenging to step into her psyche because she believes that if the world refuses to give her respect, she’ll take it by any means necessary. That emotional fire is what makes her both powerful and unpredictable.”
Co-actor Karan Sharma, who plays Guddu, added, “What drew me to Guddu was the emotional shift his journey goes through. When he first meets Divya, he is fascinated by her boldness and sharp mind. But as they begin committing crimes together, he slowly realizes that her ambition runs far deeper and darker than he imagined. Watching that transformation unfold, and being a part of it, was both thrilling and unsettling”.
