India’s Festive Engine Starts in Kerala

In this article, Varghese Chandy, Vice President – Marketing & Advertising Sales, Malayala Manorama argues that Onam is India's earliest and most influential festive consumption cycle, offering brands an opportunity to test demand, optimize campaigns, and capture consumer spending before the nationwide festive season.

India’s Festive Engine Starts in Kerala
Share Share ShareShare

Every year around late August or early September, national marketers start tuning their campaign engines for Navratri and Diwali. Yet, by the time those campaigns go live, a massive wave of consumer spending has already swept through Kerala.

Onam isn’t just a regional cultural festival. It is the first in the festival calendar of India and a concentrated annual liquidity injection.

During this 10 to 15 day window, Kerala’s economy absorbs a conservatively estimated ₹20,000 crore to ₹25,000 crore in consumer spending. Retail sales across key categories jump by 30% to 40% compared to standard monthly averages. For brands willing to look beyond conventional media plans, Kerala during Onam provides the clearest preview of overall consumer sentiment across India.

Anatomy of a ₹25,000 Crore Liquidity Wave

What drives this degree of purchasing power in a single state? It comes down to a unique convergence of household capital, government cash flow, and global remittances.

  1. The Influx of NRK Capital: Non Resident Keralites (NRKs) return home or send funds back for Onam. This triggers major, planned household upgrades from real estate down to smartphones and consumer durables.
  2. State Liquidity Injections: Salary advances , Onam bonuses, social welfare payouts, and government market intervention funds release thousands of crores directly into local circulation right before the festival.
  3.  Concentrated Category Buying: Upward of 40% of annual sales for regional gold, textile, mobile and home appliance retailers occur during this single month.
This influx manifests directly in festive advertising budgets. In 2025–2026, festive ad spend in Kerala surpassed ₹1,100 crore. BEVCO sales of about ₹ 850 crore, categories like consumer electronics, auto, textiles, and jewelry regularly allocate 30% to 50% of their annual marketing budgets to this single season.

THE ONAM ECONOMY CYCLE

│ Total Festive Economy ₹20,000 Cr – ₹25,000 Cr
│ Festive Ad Spend Pool ₹1,100+ Cr
│ Monthly Retail Jump +30% to +40% surge

The Kerala Paradox:

Marketers operating outside Kerala often make the mistake of treating the market like any other southern state. Kerala is different.

It remains one of the few places in the country where print readership doesn’t just survive; it thrives alongside digital platforms. High literacy and strong morning reading habits give newspapers like Malayala Manorama an unmatched 60% reach across households. The Malayala Manorama Group gives a total reach of almost 90% of Kerala.

When a family plans any consumer durable purchase or a major jewelry expenditure, the print morning paper still serves as the primary validation tool.

At the same time, digital adoption has surged. The winning strategy isn’t choosing between print and digital it’s leveraging print for morning credibility and high impact reach, paired with hyper targeted digital video and native content to catch shoppers while they research.

The Takeaway for National Brands

If your brand waits for October to gauge festive demand, you are missing out on early market signals.

Kerala’s Onam season is a live laboratory for pricing power, creative resonance, and product demand. When a brand succeeds during Onam, it secures early market share, builds cash reserves, and refines campaign messaging before competitors even launch their Diwali efforts.

The ₹25,000+ crore market is waiting. The brands that win it are the ones that treat Kerala not as a regional line item, but as the engine of their entire festive strategy.
