Mumbai: India’s youngest sports presenter and outspoken diabetes advocate, Kiara Powar, has reignited her awareness campaign, #InsulinSeMatDaro, after a troubling encounter with security at a major cricket event where she was asked to dispose of her insulin pen before entering the venue.
Recounting the incident in a heartfelt Instagram reel, Kiara shared how she was stopped at the stadium gate—one that was hosting one of India’s largest matches—and was told to discard her insulin pen if she wanted to proceed inside.
“Both my health and my insulin were compromised due to the sheer ignorance,” she said.
The #InsulinSeMatDaro campaign was first launched in November, Diabetes Awareness Month in India, with the objective to raise awareness about the importance of insulin in diabetes management, dismantle myths, and advocate for accessible and equitable care. It also aimed to spark conversations around the physical, emotional, and social toll diabetes takes on patients and their caregivers.
Kiara, shaken by the experience but undeterred in her mission, has relaunched the campaign with renewed purpose. She now invites people living with diabetes across the country to share their own stories of discrimination, ignorance, or difficulties encountered when carrying insulin in public spaces.
“As a diabetes advocate, it is my responsibility to spread awareness on this basic necessity…I have built this platform to raise awareness and the more stories we share, the louder we become,” she said in her reel.
Encouraging community participation, Kiara urges individuals to post their experiences using the #InsulinSeMatDaro hashtag and tag her, in an effort to amplify these narratives and push for systemic changes.
Through this campaign revival, Kiara hopes to influence public policies and spark dialogue around making public spaces in India more inclusive for diabetics. As she rightly points out, with India being dubbed the diabetes capital of the world, creating supportive infrastructure is no longer optional — it’s imperative.
