Delhi: Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., has marked its 80th Founders Day today, honouring the legacy of J.C. Mahindra and K.C. Mahindra, who established the company on October 2, 1945 — the same day the world celebrates Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary.
Eight decades ago, Mahindra announced its launch in The Times of India with an advertisement inviting enterprising individuals from all communities to join a company built on courage, fairness, and opportunity. This bold and inclusive call came at a time when the world was still grappling with war, economic uncertainty, and social division.

Anand Mahindra, Chairman, Mahindra Group, said, “Eighty years ago, the Mahindra Group was born with a crystal-clear purpose: to help build our nascent nation. Our founders pledged to develop industry, create livelihoods, and enable communities to rise from the violent throes of the struggle for independence into a brighter future. Today, we once again are in turbulent times, and we have the opportunity to renew that pledge to strive together to propel India towards technological self-reliance and global respect.”

Speaking on the milestone, Dr Anish Shah, Group CEO & MD, Mahindra Group, added, “Our founders were ahead of their time. Their first ad did not talk about products or profits, it highlighted the ‘principles which will guide their activities’: entrepreneurship, integrity, diversity, and a fearless optimism about India’s future. Eighty years later, those principles continue to guide us as we innovate, empower communities, and drive positive change across the world.”
From assembling Willys jeeps in post-war India to becoming a global federation spanning mobility, technology, finance, hospitality, and renewable energy, Mahindra has remained true to its founding purpose of “Rise” — growing only when enabling others to rise. Today, the Group operates in over 100 countries, championing sustainability, skilling, rural prosperity, gender diversity, and technology.
The original 1945 advertisement reflected Mahindra’s timeless belief that talent knows no boundaries and opportunity should be open to all. As Mahindra celebrates its 80th year, it is reaffirming its commitment to building a future that is as inclusive and entrepreneurial as its beginnings. Operating across 70% of India’s GDP, the Group remains deeply anchored in its values while staying aligned with India’s growth story.
At the core of Mahindra’s journey are its associates, whose agility and collaborative spirit continue to drive its purpose-led growth. Beyond profits, Mahindra focuses on impact, exemplified by initiatives such as Kaabil, which empowers women with employable skills, and Nanhi Kali, which provides holistic education to underprivileged girls.
Despite global economic headwinds, Mahindra believes India is uniquely positioned to become a global manufacturing powerhouse. With a young workforce, growing infrastructure, and favourable policies, the Group sees immense potential for India to lead globally. As Mahindra enters its ninth decade, it aspires to continue being a platform for possibilities, carrying forward the values of its founders while shaping opportunities for generations to come.
