Gurugram: In a landmark leadership transition, Tarun Garg has assumed charge as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL), becoming the first Indian national to head the company since its inception nearly three decades ago.
The appointment marks a defining moment in HMIL’s 29-year journey in India and underscores the growing strategic importance of the Indian market within the global operations of Hyundai Motor Group.
A New Phase of Leadership
With over 32 years of experience in the automotive industry, Garg brings deep expertise across sales, marketing, distribution, product strategy, brand communication, and financial management. His elevation to the top role signals continuity as well as ambition, having previously served as Head of Sales, Service & Marketing, followed by Whole-time Director and Chief Operating Officer at HMIL.
During his tenure in senior leadership roles, HMIL delivered record-breaking sales for three consecutive years, achieved its highest-ever profitability and EBITDA margins, and successfully executed the largest IPO in Indian equity market history in 2024. The company also strengthened its position in the SUV segment, driven by a sharp focus on profitability, customer experience, and digitalisation.
Vision Anchored in Future-Ready Mobility
Assuming office, Garg described India’s automotive sector as being at an “exciting inflection point,” shaped by innovation, sustainability, and rapidly evolving customer expectations.
His strategic roadmap for HMIL is anchored around four key pillars:
-
Future-ready mobility: Accelerating electric vehicles, hybrids, and connected mobility solutions through a ₹45,000 crore investment roadmap leading up to FY 2030.
-
People and market focus: Empowering employees while deepening engagement with dealer and supplier networks.
-
Customer-centric growth: Delivering seamless, trust-led experiences across every HMIL touchpoint.
-
Make in India, made for the world: Enhancing indigenisation across manufacturing plants and strengthening HMIL’s role as an export hub for emerging markets.
Aligned with Hyundai’s global vision of Progress for Humanity, Garg has reiterated the company’s commitment to sustainable growth, technological leadership, and positioning India as a core pillar in Hyundai’s global value chain.
Beyond Numbers: A People-First Approach
Beyond operational and financial performance, Garg is widely recognised for his inclusive, purpose-driven leadership style. Under his guidance, HMIL launched initiatives such as Samarth by Hyundai, aimed at improving awareness and accessibility for people with disabilities in India.
An alumnus of Delhi Technological University (formerly Delhi College of Engineering) and IIM Lucknow, Garg combines a strong engineering foundation with business acumen—credentials that have shaped his leadership journey across roles, including his earlier stint at Maruti Suzuki India Limited, where he rose to Executive Director of Marketing, Logistics, Parts & Accessories.
As Hyundai Motor India enters its next phase of growth, Garg’s appointment reflects both confidence in local leadership and a long-term bet on India’s role in shaping global automotive innovation. With a clear focus on future mobility, customer delight, and export-led manufacturing, HMIL is poised to take a significant leap forward under its first Indian MD & CEO.
