New Delhi: US President Donald J. Trump on Monday shared the cover of India Today magazine’s “Newsmakers of the Year 2025” edition on social media, featuring Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi alongside himself, under the headline “The Mover & The Shaker.”
The post, shared without any accompanying caption, immediately triggered widespread speculation over its intent, timing, and possible diplomatic significance.
The development coincided with a social media post by US envoy to India Sergio Gor, who revealed that President Trump had spoken with Prime Minister Modi earlier in the day. Gor did not disclose details of the conversation, instead asking followers to “stay tuned” for further updates, adding to the intrigue surrounding the sudden social media activity.
The absence of any immediate clarification from either the White House or the US envoy further fuelled curiosity over the substance and outcome of the high-level talks.
Later in the day, however, President Trump ended the speculation by posting on the same platform, Truth Social, announcing a significant bilateral trade breakthrough.
“We agreed to a Trade Deal between the United States and India, whereby the United States will charge a reduced Reciprocal Tariff, lowering it from 25% to 18%,” Trump wrote.
The announcement marked a major development in India–US economic relations and followed recent diplomatic engagements between the two countries. On January 29, India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor in New Delhi, where both sides held wide-ranging discussions covering defence cooperation, trade ties, and critical minerals.
According to official sources, the talks were aimed at building momentum in the India–US strategic partnership ahead of Jaishankar’s scheduled visit to the United States later this week.
The timing of the India Today magazine cover share, the confirmed leader-level conversation, and the subsequent trade deal announcement together underscore renewed diplomatic and economic engagement between New Delhi and Washington, positioning both leaders prominently in the global political narrative as 2025’s key power brokers.
