New Delhi: The appointments committee of cabinet (ACC) on Wednesday approved the appointment of the Indian administrative service (IAS) officer Supriya Sahu as the full-time director general of the state broadcaster Doordarshan. The order was passed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday.
“After almost two years, Doordarshan will get a full-time director general which is a huge achievement for the broadcaster,” said a senior official at Doordarshan associated with the matter.
Doordarshan has been under acting heads for almost two years due to a delay in the regular appointments. Former director at Film and Television Institute of India, Tripurari Sharan was the last full-time director general at Doordarshan who stepped down in July 2014.
Currently, Doordarshan is being headed by Aparna Vaish. She was earlier the senior-most additional director general (ADG) at Doordarshan. “Since, Supriya Sahu’s name was not approved, the board (Prasar Bharati) had decided to appoint the ADG as the head,” said the official.
Sahu, a 1991 batch IAS from the Tamil Nadu cadre, was chosen by the public broadcaster Prasar Bharati in February, after which the broadcaster had recommended her name to the information & broadcasting (I&B) ministry for approval. Sahu has earlier served as the director at I&B ministry and later got promoted to the post of joint secretary.
