The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information Technology questioned the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting about the proposed amendments to the Cinematography, as per media reports.
The Committee has asked the ministry why it could not bring a complete Cinematograph (Amendment) Bill, covering all facets of film making that includes piracy, film certification, and age-related classification of film content.
As per the media report, the parliamentary Committee led by Shashi Tharoor asked the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to explain why such a provision would be introduced in the Cinematograph Act.
The parliamentary panel’s members also referred to a 2000 Supreme Court order, which observed that the Centre could not have revisional powers over films that are already cleared by the Central Board of Film Certification, claimed the media report.
According to another media report, the ministry has informed the panel that the proposed changes have been misunderstood. The board will have the power to make the final decision on certifications.
