The Delhi High Court recently ordered Telegram to reveal the identities of individuals or channel owners who were unauthorizedly disseminating Dainik Jagran ePapers.
The Court further stated that Telegram must follow Indian law and reveal information such as IP addresses, mobile phone numbers, and devices used in operating channels involved in copyright infringement.
“The defendant no.1 (Telegram) shall comply with the direction issued by this Court vide order dated 29.05.2020 within a period of three weeks from today. The information may be disclosed by the defendant no. 1 in a sealed cover. On perusing the information, the Court shall consider if any further directions are required to be passed on the next date of hearing,” the Court said.
In May 2020, the Court issued an order directing Telegram to provide the identity of the channels’ users and owners. However, Telegram stated that, while the channels have been removed, there are some challenges with exposing the identities because its regulations do not permit it, and that it also does not have the information.
