A Complete Guide to the Auto Sweep Facility of a Savings Account
Share Share ShareShare

Managing your savings account can reveal an opportunity to earn a bit more without extra effort. Your funds remain secure, but they do not simply sit idle—they actively grow. This is where a unique feature comes into play, transforming dormant balances into higher-yielding opportunities. This is known as auto sweep facility. It seamlessly bridges the gap between savings and income. So, let’s discuss this feature in detail.

What is auto sweep facility?

The Auto Sweep Facility is a feature that lets you automatically transfer surplus funds from your savings account to a fixed deposit (FD) account, boosting your interest earnings. When your savings account balance exceeds a certain threshold, the extra amount is swept into an FD, where it earns higher interest. This facility also maintains liquidity by allowing partial withdrawals when needed, so you can access
funds while benefiting from higher returns. It’s a seamless way to make the most of your savings.

How does auto sweep facility work?

Let us understand this with an example. So, when you choose the auto sweep facility, this is how your money works:

This is an Internal document.

Set a limit – Choose a minimum sweep-in or sweep-out limit for your savings account, say ₹25,000.

Automatic transfer – If your balance goes above this, like hitting ₹35,000, the extra ₹10,000 moves to a fixed deposit (FD) automatically.

Earn more interest – This ₹10,000 now earns higher interest in the FD, unlike in the savings account.

Access funds when needed – If your balance drops below ₹25,000, the required funds transfer back from the FD to cover the difference.

What are the features of auto sweep facility?

The auto sweep facility comes with several important features. It boosts your earnings by automatically transferring surplus funds into a fixed deposit when they exceed a set limit. This facility combines savings and fixed deposit benefits, providing a flexible way to earn higher interest while retaining liquidity. You can use it to build a separate emergency fund and it allows for easy fund transfers back to your
savings when required. Additionally, the deposit can be auto renewed for periods between one month and five years.

What are the benefits of auto sweep facility?

The following are some advantages of auto sweep facility:

  • Earn more interest

Your extra savings are automatically placed in a fixed deposit, where they can earn more interest than a regular savings account. This feature helps boost your overall returns, especially in low-interest savings environments.

  • Easy and automatic

Funds move automatically to a fixed deposit when your balance exceeds a set limit. You do not need to manage these transfers manually, saving you both time and effort.

  • Access anytime

Unlike traditional fixed deposits, an auto sweep FD lets you withdraw funds anytime without penalties. This means you can access your money whenever needed, maintaining both liquidity and flexibility.

  • No idle money

The facility ensures that surplus funds do not sit idle. By transferring them to a fixed deposit, you maximise earnings while still keeping funds accessible when required.

  • Customisation options

You can adjust both the threshold for sweep-ins and the tenure of the fixed deposit. This allows you to tailor the facility to your financial needs and goals.

Endnote

Whether you are considering opening a zero-balance account online or a premium one, auto sweep facility is available. The feature helps grow your savings and ensures that your funds stay accessible and flexible. So, you can make the most of your savings with minimal effort. Make sure to explore all your account options to find the one that best suits you.
