Mumbai: Instagram has announced a fresh slate of India-focused updates, strengthening its push to make content discovery and creation more inclusive across the country’s diverse linguistic landscape. Unveiled at the platform’s House of Instagram event in Mumbai, the upgrades centre on significantly expanding Meta AI’s translation capabilities and introducing new Indian script fonts for Reels—two features aimed at elevating both creator reach and viewer accessibility.
In the coming months, users will be able to translate Reels using Meta’s AI assistant in five additional Indian languages: Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Marathi. This expansion builds on Meta’s earlier rollout that enabled creators to add multi-language text in English, Hindi, Spanish and Portuguese. The enhanced tool processes voice, tone and language to generate translated audio that still sounds like the creator, with an optional lip-sync feature that aligns mouth movements to the translated speech—designed to help creators engage wider national and global audiences without losing authenticity.
Alongside translation updates, Instagram is bringing new script options to its editing suite. Creators will soon be able to apply text in Devanagari and Bengali–Assamese scripts across Reels, captions and on-screen overlays. These fonts—launching initially for Hindi, Marathi, Bengali and Assamese—are being introduced to improve readability, deepen cultural relevance and help creators tell richer visual stories. Android devices are expected to receive additional language support over the coming days.
The rollout is designed to simplify how creators integrate regional scripts into their content. While editing Reels, users can head to the “Text” section and choose from a new set of fonts, which will automatically surface if their device language is already set to Devanagari or Bengali–Assamese. For others, the new scripts will appear as dedicated font options. Meta says the typography refresh, coupled with enhanced AI tools, will support features like text-to-speech, AR overlays, dynamic text alignment with music beats, and a growing library of sound effects—ultimately making Reels more expressive and accessible for India’s multilingual creator community.
Together, these updates signal Instagram’s accelerating efforts to localise its product experience, enabling creators to tap into India’s vast regional markets while making content more discoverable for millions of viewers across different linguistic backgrounds.
