New Delhi: OpenAI has strengthened its international leadership team with the appointment of Emmanuel Marill as its first Managing Director for the EMEA region, underscoring the company’s growing focus on Europe, the Middle East and Africa as key markets for expansion.
In his new role, Marill will lead business operations and oversee regional strategy, partnerships and growth initiatives across EMEA. The move reflects OpenAI’s intent to build a more localised operating model as demand for its AI tools continues to accelerate across global markets.
Welcoming the appointment, Jason Kwon, Chief Strategy Officer at OpenAI, highlighted the importance of the region, noting that countries such as the UK, France, Germany and Spain already rank among the company’s most active markets for products like ChatGPT and Codex. He added that Marill’s leadership will play a critical role in aligning OpenAI’s regional strategy with the evolving needs of users, developers, enterprises and institutions.
Marill joins OpenAI from Airbnb, where he served as Managing Director for EMEA and ANZ, bringing extensive experience in scaling international operations and leading large, diverse markets.
Announcing his new role on LinkedIn, Marill expressed enthusiasm about contributing to OpenAI’s next phase of growth. He emphasised his interest in leveraging his experience to expand access to AI technologies across the region, while also acknowledging the transformative impact AI has already had on both his professional and personal life.
His appointment comes at a time when AI adoption is rapidly accelerating across EMEA, with businesses and individuals increasingly integrating the technology into everyday workflows. As the landscape evolves, OpenAI’s regional leadership push signals a deeper commitment to building infrastructure, partnerships and governance frameworks tailored to local markets.
