Do People Spend Too Much Time Playing Video Games?
Share Share ShareShare

The gaming community has increased exponentially over the years, and video games have become an essential part of people’s life. It can not be denied that the popularity of video games has increased in recent years. This can be due to the improved quality of the gaming experience. There are multiple reasons why gamers like to spend their time playing games with friends.

ExpressVPN’s survey reveals that millennials tend to play games the most. Even though video games are popular among all generations, they are heavily popular among males above the age of 30. The study also reveals that more than half of gamers find it hard to stop playing games even if they are negatively impacting their day-to-day lives. Additionally, it is more common for male players to spend their time gaming as they find it easier to connect with friends by playing games with them.

The Gaming Addiction

With their high graphics and well-structured plotlines, video games make it hard for people to stop playing and focus on other things. Some users sometimes struggle to take a break from their favorite games to perform activities like eating and working. Based on a survey, millennials tend to indulge more in video games as they are more financially stable to invest money in purchasing gaming consoles and video games. Additionally, it is not feasible for younger generations to waste their time on video games when they have responsibilities like work and studies.

It can not be denied that video games are popular across all generations and genders. However, teens and young adults spend more time on social media and are more inclined to spend time hanging out with friends rather than playing video games. On the contrary, millennials find it easier to spend time playing video games while being isolated from outer influences.

Which Ages Play The Most Games?

Based on a survey, people above the age of 40 tend to indulge most in playing video games. Some players spend more than 24 hours a week playing their favorite video games. Even though players as young as 16 spend time playing video games, the time spent playing games for younger generations is relatively low.

The reason for such a difference is the freedom to play video games. Gen Z is bound by their parents, work, and social life, so they spend less time playing video games. On the contrary, millennials usually have stable jobs and work environments and are more financially stable to invest in gaming gear.

Frequent gaming tends to increase the need to indulge in gaming, and many gamers have stated that they feel like they might be addicted. This can severely impact the lives of people who tend to play games a lot. Players have stated that they feel like they should cut off the hours they spend playing games. Many have admitted that they feel irritated and frustrated if they are unable to spend time playing their video games. It is like a constant need for such players to check on their game progress and obsess over the game they play frequently.

Even though female gamers are less in percentage, women who play video games are equally prone to getting addicted to video games. However, based on studies, very few women feel the need to indulge their time in playing games. There are male and female players in the gaming world, but there is a substantial difference in the kind of games that are played by each gender. This could be the reason why fewer women feel compelled to spend so much of their time playing video games.

How Does Gaming Affects Players?

When it comes to playing habits, men tend to find friends through video games. This increases the possibility of them playing video games, as games aren’t just a way to unwind and relax for them. Video games are also a way for men to connect with their gaming friends. Based on studies, women are less likely to create a friend community through video games, and they usually play single-player games.

However, no matter the gender, people who are addicted to gaming can neglect their day-to-day duties without feeling guilty. This neglect can essentially lead to severe negative consequences in the lives of such people. Gaming addiction can start as a simple emotional withdrawal from other people. However, it can gradually increase in intensity. Some gamers have admitted that they do not feel the need to socialize or spend time on other personal activities. This stunts the personal and social growth of people who are addicted to gaming.

Even though the initial stages of gaming addiction might not seem problematic, they can gradually isolate people from their friends and family. Players can tend to have severe emotional seclusion from interacting with people in real life. It is a fact that video game players feel emotionally attached to their games. However, this tendency to seek escape in video games makes them forget the real world.

Conclusion

There are multiple reasons why players tend to get addicted to video gaming. Be it the flawless storylines or the well-developed character backstories. It is quite easy for frequent players to get heavily engrossed in the world of gaming. Many players have also stated that they find a sense of familiarity and escape while playing video games. the emotional investment of players in video games is one of the biggest reasons that the video gaming industry is constantly expanding.

Developers these days try to create highly detailed games, so players do not feel bored with the game. Additionally, the invention of VR and AR technologies has increased the possibilities for developers to create exceptional games. Gamers also tend to ignore their day-to-day tasks in an attempt to spend more time gaming, which can negatively impact their personal and social life.
