London: Dominic Proctor, one of the most transformative figures in the global media landscape and a foundational force behind WPP’s media empire, has passed away, according to multiple media reports. Widely credited with reshaping the global media planning and buying ecosystem, Proctor’s legacy spans more than three decades of strategic leadership and industry innovation.
Proctor’s trailblazing career began at JWT, then the UK’s largest advertising agency, where he rose swiftly to become CEO of the London office at just 35. Known for his clarity of thought, personable leadership, and future-focused mindset, he helped steer the agency through a critical period of change—from traditional full-service advertising models to more specialized, media-driven approaches.
In 1997, Proctor was handpicked to lead Mindshare as its founding CEO. The agency, formed by combining the media departments of JWT and Ogilvy, marked WPP’s first standalone media venture. Under his stewardship, Mindshare rapidly rose to global prominence, reshaping the industry’s view of media as a standalone strategic driver rather than a supporting function.
Proctor’s influence grew further when he took the helm as Global President of GroupM, overseeing WPP’s consolidated media investment operations. From that position, he played a central role in establishing GroupM as the largest media buying organization in the world, holding sway over billions in global advertising spend until his departure in 2016.
Tributes poured in across the industry, with WPP CEO Mark Read describing Proctor as “one of the most influential people in the global media and marketing industry.” In a heartfelt post, Read wrote: “Dominic Proctor was first and foremost a dear friend and colleague to countless people across the world of advertising. He was always generous with his time and considerable wisdom, and always very good company.”
Read also credited Proctor with mentoring countless professionals, including himself, and added: “As the tributes pour in I know that, alongside the deep sadness and loss, there will be so much admiration, respect and affection for a truly remarkable person.”
Beyond his contributions to advertising, Proctor was committed to philanthropic causes. He was the co-founder and long-time chair of Tommy’s, a UK-based charity focused on pregnancy and baby health.
Industry leaders and former colleagues fondly recalled Proctor’s influence and character. Gowthaman Ragothaman, former GroupM executive, paid tribute saying, “A true visionary who shaped the narrative for a media-independent organization, yet remained deeply rooted in the creative world we came from.”
For many in the industry, he was simply “Dom”—a mentor, strategist, and leader whose vision helped define the modern era of media.
Dominic Proctor leaves behind a legacy of innovation, mentorship, and transformation that continues to shape the advertising and media world today.
