Mumbai: Essel Group has marked a historic milestone as the diversified Indian conglomerate completed 100 years of operations, celebrating a century-long journey of entrepreneurship, innovation and nation building across multiple industries.
Established in 1926 in the small town of Adampur, Essel Group has evolved from a traditional trading business into a multi-faceted conglomerate with interests spanning packaging, amusement parks, home entertainment, news, content distribution, infrastructure, real estate, education, technology, lifestyle and finance.
The Group described the milestone as the “Impression of a Century,” reflecting its contribution to India’s economic and social landscape over the past 100 years, including generating employment opportunities for more than 10 million people across the country.
Over the decades, the Group diversified into several pioneering ventures, many of which created entirely new industry segments in India. From introducing modern packaging technology through Essel Propack to launching India’s first private satellite television channel Zee TV and private news channel Zee News, the company played a defining role in shaping India’s media and entertainment ecosystem.
The Group also ventured into leisure and tourism with the launch of Essel World, once recognised as Asia’s biggest amusement park, while its education arm Zee Learn expanded access to quality learning through a large network of pre-schools and educational institutions.
Commemorating the occasion, Dr. Subhash Chandra said, “Essel Group’s journey has been one of persistence, resilience, innovation and growth. Our belief that progress must create value for the society and Nation at large has guided the pioneering steps undertaken by the Group across every business dimension. Me and my brothers are extremely proud to mark this momentous milestone of 100 years that has been built by generations of vision and courage to venture into the unknown and truly leave an imprint of a century across every industry. Essel Group’s journey has evolved alongside our Nation, and I am proud to note that together, we have unlocked economic value and enabled social transformation to drive national progress.”
To mark the milestone, Dr. Chandra addressed more than 10,000 employees globally during a special townhall, reflecting on the Group’s journey and recognising the contributions made by employees across generations.
The company highlighted that since 1967 it has continuously reinvented itself by adopting a start-up mindset and entrepreneurial culture, enabling it to adapt to changing market dynamics and create new growth opportunities across sectors.
Beyond business, Essel Group also underscored its contributions to social impact initiatives through organisations such as Ekal Vidyalaya, Global Vipassana Foundation, and Subhash Chandra Foundation, focusing on education, rural empowerment, youth development and community welfare.
Looking ahead, the Group said technology, digital platforms and the growing attention economy would remain key focus areas for the next phase of growth. The company plans to continue investing in integrated and future-ready platforms across content, technology and digital ecosystems while aligning its strategy with India’s broader growth ambitions.
As it enters its next century, Essel Group aims to build on its entrepreneurial legacy by expanding into emerging business segments and driving innovation-led growth across industries.
