Mumbai: The FIFA World Cup 2026 Final, streamed on ZEE5, attracted 80.18 million unique viewers in India, making it the largest single-title audience recorded by Chrome DM COTT, the OTT audience measurement platform, since its inception.
According to Chrome DM COTT, the final between Spain and Argentina, played on July 19 at the MetLife Stadium, generated record digital viewership, driven in part by the expectation that it would be Lionel Messi’s final FIFA World Cup appearance. Spain defeated defending champions Argentina 1–0 after extra time, with substitute Ferran Torres scoring the decisive goal in the 106th minute.
The platform’s data showed that male viewers accounted for 67.57 million (84%) of the audience, while female viewers stood at 12.61 million (16%). Among demographics, men aged 18–24 formed the largest segment with 26.84 million viewers, followed by the 25–35 age group at 21.59 million.
The report also highlighted football’s strong appeal among younger audiences. Female viewers aged 18–24 accounted for 6.24 million, while those in the 25–35 category contributed 3.69 million viewers.
Regionally, West Bengal emerged as the largest market with 18.92 million viewers, followed by the Northeast with 12.20 million and Kerala with 8.08 million. Karnataka recorded 7.04 million viewers, while Tamil Nadu contributed 5.36 million, underscoring the continued dominance of India’s traditional football markets.
One of the report’s key findings was the dominance of Connected TV (CTV) viewing. Unlike typical OTT consumption trends, CTV attracted 46.07 million viewers, surpassing 27.93 million viewers on mobile devices. Around 6.17 million viewers watched the match across both platforms, indicating strong appointment viewing for the marquee sporting event.

Commenting on the findings, Riya Maity, Business Head – Chrome Digital, said, “At 80.18 Mn viewers, the FIFA World Cup 2026 Final is the single largest title we’ve measured on COTT — and the numbers tell you why. This was a Final carrying the weight of Messi’s likely last World Cup match, and India showed up for it. The standout data point is the device split: CTV at 46.07 Mn actually surpassed mobile, which almost never happens on OTT. That’s the signature of true appointment viewing — families and groups gathering around the big screen. West Bengal, the Northeast, and Kerala leading the state chart simply confirms where India’s football heart beats loudest.”
Chrome DM COTT said the data reinforces the growing scale of premium live sports consumption on digital platforms, with marquee international sporting events increasingly attracting television-like audiences on connected devices while expanding OTT reach across regions and demographic groups in India.
