New Delhi: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has appointed Harinder Kumar as its new Secretary for a period of two years, strengthening the regulator’s leadership team at a time of rapid developments in India’s telecommunications and digital ecosystem.
Kumar, an Indian Telecom Service (ITS) officer, will join the regulator on deputation under foreign service terms, according to an official communication issued on June 10.
Before his appointment to TRAI, Kumar served in a senior leadership role at Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL). He is currently Chief General Manager of BSNL’s Maharashtra telecom circle, one of the public sector telecom operator’s key operational regions.
His move to the telecom regulator comes as TRAI continues to play an increasingly significant role in shaping India’s communications landscape. The authority is actively involved in policy and regulatory matters relating to telecommunications, broadband expansion, digital connectivity, spectrum management, emerging technologies, and digital inclusion initiatives.
As Secretary, Kumar will be responsible for supporting the functioning of the regulator and coordinating administrative and policy-related activities across the organization.
With extensive experience in the telecom sector and a background in managing large-scale operational responsibilities at BSNL, Kumar brings deep industry expertise to the role. His appointment is expected to support TRAI’s ongoing efforts to address evolving regulatory challenges arising from next-generation connectivity, digital infrastructure growth, and emerging technology ecosystems.
