Mumbai: HealthCare Global Enterprises (HCG), India’s largest dedicated cancer care network, has launched #MirrorsDontLie, a nationwide awareness campaign aimed at encouraging women to regularly check for early signs of breast cancer. Introduced as part of this year’s International Women’s Day theme #GiveToGain, the initiative encourages women to spend a few minutes each month checking for any changes in their breasts and to seek timely medical advice if they notice anything unusual.

Built around a simple everyday habit, the campaign encourages women to use the moment they spend in front of a mirror as a reminder to stay aware of changes in their breasts. The initiative aligns with global breast awareness guidance promoted by leading cancer organisations.

The campaign will be rolled out across HCG’s network of 24 hospitals in 21 cities across India. It is primarily focused on women between the ages of 30 and 60, a demographic group where early awareness and detection can significantly influence treatment outcomes.

“For over 35 years, HCG has focused on helping people detect cancer earlier and treat it better,” said Manu Sankar Das, Chief Marketing Officer, HealthCare Global Enterprises. “This Women’s Day, under the theme #GiveToGain, we want to encourage women to give a few minutes to themselves and gain the advantage of early awareness and timely diagnosis. Through #MirrorsDontLie, we are trying to anchor that awareness in something very familiar — the mirror.”

Breast cancer remains the most common cancer among women in India. Estimates from the World Health Organization and analyses published in The Lancet indicate that the country sees close to two lakh new cases annually. A significant proportion of Indian women continue to be diagnosed at advanced stages, contributing to higher mortality rates compared to many high-income countries.

“Many global cancer organisations now emphasise the importance of breast awareness, understanding what is normal for your own breasts so you can recognise a change early,” said Dr. Mahesh Bandimegal, Senior Consultant – Surgical Oncology, specialised in breast surgery at HCG. “Self-checks are not a replacement for clinical examinations or mammography, but they can be an important first step that prompts women to seek medical advice earlier.”

As part of the initiative, HCG has introduced a Mirror-Integrated Breast Awareness Guide, designed to be placed alongside a mirror. The compact guide provides simple prompts that help women check for visible or physical changes in the breasts during their daily routines.

The guide highlights key warning signs such as new lumps, skin dimpling, swelling, nipple inversion, unusual discharge or persistent pain. It also encourages women to take a brief “mirror minute” each month to remain familiar with how their breasts normally look and feel.

HCG doctors recommend that women regularly check for any changes and promptly consult a qualified doctor if something unusual is noticed. According to experts, late diagnosis remains one of the major contributors to breast cancer mortality in India, while early detection significantly improves survival outcomes and expands treatment options.

Through the #MirrorsDontLie campaign, HCG aims to make breast awareness easier and more approachable by embedding it into everyday routines. By turning a simple daily activity into a health reminder, the initiative seeks to encourage women to notice changes early and take timely steps toward medical care.
