New Delhi: In a significant leadership move, the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting has appointed noted lyricist, writer, and communications expert Prasoon Joshi as the Chairman of Prasar Bharati, India’s public service broadcaster. The appointment comes at a time when the broadcasting sector is undergoing rapid technological evolution and shifts in audience consumption patterns.
Joshi brings with him a diverse and distinguished body of work spanning literature, advertising, cinema, and public communication. Widely recognised for his evocative writing and culturally rooted storytelling, he has contributed to some of India’s most memorable film lyrics and impactful advertising campaigns, shaping narratives that resonate across demographics.
Congratulating Joshi on his new role, Union Minister of Information & Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted his creative legacy and cultural depth. He noted that Joshi’s work reflects a strong connection to India’s ethos and expressed confidence that his leadership would infuse Prasar Bharati with renewed purpose, energy, and a distinctive creative direction.
Prior to this appointment, Joshi served as Chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), a role he assumed in August 2017. During his tenure, he focused on strengthening certification processes while maintaining a balance between creative freedom and regulatory oversight, engaging actively with stakeholders across the film industry.
His corporate leadership experience includes serving as CEO of McCann World Group India and Chairman of McCann World Group Asia Pacific, where he played a key role in driving creative excellence and strategic growth across markets. In addition, Joshi has been associated with cultural institutions, serving as a trustee of the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts since 2016.
With a career that bridges creative industries and institutional leadership, Joshi is expected to bring a fresh perspective to Prasar Bharati. His appointment signals a potential shift towards more culturally nuanced and creatively driven public broadcasting, aligned with the demands of a rapidly changing media landscape.
