Mumbai: Mumbaikars came together to support a massive cleanliness drive today across the city including Juhu Koliwada Beach, Mithi River & Reti Bunder in Mahim, Airoli Mangroves &Kharghar in Navi Mumbai, Poisar Slum in Kandivali, and Picnic Point in Aarey Colony. Organised by Things2do and supported by Maharashtra Tourism, the drive is aimed at positioning Mumbai among the top 10 cleanest cities in India.

Over 500 enthusiastic volunteers across Mumbai teamed up together today between 8 am and 10 am for this clean up drive and managed to collect over 100 kgs of garbage, making this activity a huge success. The initiative is a part of the ongoing Mumbai Festival that began on 25th January and will conclude on 14th February. The main objective of this festival is to promote tourism in the city.

With a strategic vision of making Mumbai a green destination, Maharashtra Tourism is implementing sustainable tourism practices in the city.

Shri Aditya Thackeray, Hon’ble Minister for Tourism and Environment, Maharashtra commented, “Things2do and MajhiVasundhara joined hands to launch a city-wide clean-up movement under #TheMumbaiFestival with 500+ Mumbaikars participating across Mumbai. So happy to see so many citizens step out on a Sunday to clean our beaches. Now let’s do our bit by not littering.”

Talking about this initiative, Dr. Dhananjay Sawalkar, Director of Directorate of Tourism (DoT) said, “Maharashtra Tourism has been supporting Mumbai festival since it’s commencement and I’m really glad that this cleanliness drive is being undertaken on such a large scale across the city. I am thankful to Mumbaikars for their wholehearted participation and support to the drive. I also want to congratulate Things2do for the initiative. We need more such activities to reboot and boost tourism in the city.”

He further added, “Maharashtra Tourism is geared up to promote sustainable tourism. We are soon coming up with a policy catering to sustainable tourism as it’s the need of the hour.”
