New Delhi: Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Thursday announced that the rules under the Promotion and Regulation of Online Games Act will come into force from October 1, 2025.
Speaking about the legislation passed by Parliament, the minister said the government has held extensive consultations with key stakeholders, including online gaming companies, banks, and industry bodies, over the past three years. “We have been having discussions with them for almost three years, and after passing the law, once again, we engaged with them,” Vaishnaw noted.
He further emphasized that the rules have now been finalized after a wide-ranging consultative process. “We also engaged with the banks. We engaged with practically every stakeholder possible in this, and we have finalised the rules. The rules will be promulgated with effect from 1st October, and before that, we will have one more round of discussions with the industry,” the minister said.
Acknowledging the industry’s concerns, Vaishnaw added that the government remains open to a flexible and consultative approach. “And in case they need some more time, we will definitely look at a more consultative approach. At this point of time, we are targeting that we start the implementation of the new legislation on 1st October,” he said.
The move marks a significant step in regulating India’s booming online gaming sector, which has been seeking greater clarity on compliance frameworks and operational guidelines.
